Hands on the Road, Eyes on the Wheel of Spiritual Development
Driving the path to spiritual enlightenment is very similar. We can take our hands off the wheel for a very brief time, but we must put them back soon and continue to steer. We must keep our eyes on the road and our hands on the wheel to avoid obstructions, blockades, and unexpected turns in the road. The popular description of this path as straight and narrow is misleading. We can't just coast along and stay on the path. Materialistic people will pull us away from the path. Demons and dark being will place obstructions in the path. And our own egos will tell us we need to stop and take a break, or that we are on the wrong path and need to take a different route.
To think that once you start down the road of spiritual development, you can just coast the rest of the way is simply not true. That is like believing that once you enroll in college and attend the first day of classes, you can now coast all the way to graduation. It simply can't be done. You have to continue to attend classes, complete assignments, and pass exams. And you can't choose just the classes you like and skip the rest unless you are getting a degree in general studies. Even then, there are some minimum requirements that must be met and state-required courses that must be completed. Likewise, you must continue to work toward your spiritual enlightenment, take all the necessary training whether you like it or not, and complete all the necessary assignments if you want to “graduate”. You have to watch the road and keep your hands on the wheel until you reach the goal, and probably even after, but that another story.
