Natural Healing: Club Moss

Club moss grows almost everywhere in the world, but is especially common in England. The spores of club moss have been used for centuries to treat digestion, liver and kidney problems. It can help eliminate kidney stones and is an effective diuretic. It is also used in treating gout, scurvy, arthritis and muscle spasms. Club moss stops bleeding and promotes healing in wounds. It is used in a traditional Chinese formula to treat fevers and inflammation. It is used to treat bladder infections. Externally it can be applied to itchy irritated skin to reduce the irritation. In the past, some people used the spores to stop nose bleeds and hemorrhaging. It is sometimes used for diaper rash and bed sores. It helps prevent accumulation of fluids in the body that result in swelling. A tea made from club moss is used to treat constipation and hemorrhoids. Club most tincture is sometimes used as a natural aid to help one quit smoking or stop from drinking alcohol excessively. Back pain can be ruduced with compresses using club moss.

Lycopodium, a homeopathic remedy made from club moss, is used to treat constipation, lung problems, and fevers.

At one time, the entire club moss plant was used for medicinal purposes but now, because the plant contains harmful ingredients, only the spores are used.

A few decades ago, it was still common for people to gather club moss plants, which resemble small evergreen trees, to make Christmas wreaths. I personally remember going into the forest in Massachusetts when I was a little boy to help my mother collect it. This should be discouraged because, while the plant is fairly common, it takes twenty years or more to mature. Some states have made collecting the wild moss illegal.

Note: a related herb named Chinese club moss has somewhat different uses.
