Cultivate Patience

“A particular effort must be made to cultivate the quality of patience. Every symptom of impatience produces a paralyzing, even a destructive effect on the higher faculties that slumber in us.” ~Rudolf Steiner

Patience is not only a virtue, but for those seeking spiritual enlightenment, it is one of the most important virtues.

Patience is important because spiritual growth is a process, not something that happens instantly, or even quickly. And your journey must began where you are now so if you are 1,000 miles from the destination in a sense, you cannot expect to reach the goal as quickly as someone who starts out fifty miles from it. Also, the more materialistic you are, the more resistance you have to spiritual growth, the longer it will take.

Patience is also needed because, when you do start having glimpses of the spiritual worlds, they will be very brief and not easily brought back. Further, you may remember them only vaguely because they are knowledge for the soul, not the mind. This will be frustrating to the person who lacks patience.

So if you are a person who lacks patience, you should make an effort to develop this virtue. Avoid being in to much of a rush without good reason. That doesn't mean you should become a procrastinator, but do things at a reasonable speed and take the time to think about what you are doing (during my 35 years in the software development business, I saw many cases where software had to be rushed to completion to meet a deadline date arbitrarily chosen by the customer. In almost all cases, the result was crappy software prone to frequent errors because the programmers and testers didn't have the time to develop it properly.) If necessary, force yourself to participate in activities where you will be forced to have patience: plant seeds and wait for the plants to grow, build something that will take a significant amount of time, work with others who tend to do things slowly. Cultivate patience. You will need it if you want to succeed in spiritual enlightenment.
