Hypocrites and Sinners
And he said “You have chosen your words well when you called sinners weak and infirm. I do forgive them their weakness of body and their infirmity of spirit. For their failings have been laid upon them by their forefathers, or by the greed of their neighbors.
“But I tolerate not the hypocrite, because he himself lays a yoke upon the guileless and yielding.”
From the book Jesus The Son of Man by Kahlil Gibran
Jesus rarely criticized sinners, but did criticize hypocrites. In particular, he was not fond of those who pretended to be better than others, holier than others, more religiously perfect than their brothers and sisters when they were in public, but were crooks, liars, cheats, etc. in private. I wonder what Jesus would think of today's marketing people who boast that they can convince people to buy any piece of junk, and at far more than they should pay for it.
Hypocrites love to brag of all the good things they have done for others, of all the charity work they do. They desire the praise of men for it. Jesus told them they should help others because they were their brothers and sisters, and not with the expectation of reward or recognition for it.
My favorite kind of hypocrite is the skeptic. Those people who say they will not accept as real such things as spirit, angels and God until they see it themselves. They will not accept the existence of ghosts or any type of non-material being. They are fond of saying such beliefs are not scientific, but when the scientists, specifically Quantum Physicists, suddenly start talking about everything being connected and matter being illusion, just a big hologram, these scientists they ignore, because what the skeptics really believe in is the infallibility of themselves, not science.
All of us have probably been guilty of a little hypocrisy at times, so we all need to think about what we are saying and doing, and not just parroting things that we know are not true.
