Clearing Your Mind

If you were to go into your back yard and try to listen to a single bird singing off in the distance, you would probably find it very difficult to do so. Other birds chirping, dogs barking, kids yelling, police and fire sirens, etc. would make so much additional noise, that it is nearly impossible to hear the one thing you want to here.

The same problem exists with thinking. Our mind is constantly bombarded with numerous thoughts coming from both external sources and internal thoughts from our own brain and ego. This makes it impossible to tune in to higher levels of thought and awareness coming from the spiritual levels of reality. That is why one of the first things a spiritual teachers will try to teach is how to quiet the mind so you can listen.

Various methods are used such as meditation, or concentrating on a simple sound or idea. Listening to the sound of one hand clapping is a well-known example. Or just imagining yourself sitting in a very quiet place such as on a deserted beach. All of these methods help, but they really don't stop you from thinking, they just try to narrow it down to one thought. And it usually doesn't take long for your mind to wander away from that thought and start thinking about that project you are working on, that bill that needs to be paid, that dinner you need to cook, etc. You are told that you should keep practicing this method anyway and eventually you will be successful in clearing your mind.

Actually, you can never really clear your mind by trying, because the simple act of doing so creates thoughts. It's much like telling a person to not think of an elephant and an image of an elephant immediately fills their mind. So, while these methods are helpful for a start, the only way to truly clear the mind is to do it with the help of God. So when you start your techniques, began by asking God for his help and you greatly increase your chances of success.
