Spiritual Qualities of Metal: Mercury

Mercury is known for being a liquid at room temperature and for being highly poisonous. It has been described as a flowing river of metallic crystals. It was previously called quicksilver. Because of it's form, it is said to be a metal that represents change and transition. The expression “mad as a hatter” came from so many hat makers suffering brain damage from breathing mercury vapors that were used in making felt for hats. Alchemists used mercury in their mysterious chemistry. In Hermetic science, metals were connected to certain parts or systems in the body and mercury was connected to the nervous system and the lungs. In recent decades, it has been used in the dental amalgams that are used in fillings, but is now being banned in most places as it has been found that enough mercury can leak into the brain from those fillings to cause brain damage.

For a person, a mercury personality is someone who likes to talk, a chatterbox, a gossip, a tattle-tale. They are said to be good messengers because they like to share information but, for the very same reason, are not good at keeping secrets. They are very changeable and will jump from one fad to another, one love to another, one romance to another, one hobby to another. They like to read: books, letters, magazines, almost anything. They will probably be good as teachers, diplomats, writers, lobbyists, or any job that requires frequent public speaking or giving presentations. People who are too mercurial can counter that by wearing or carrying something made of iron or steel.
