Aging Slowly

I read in a book recently that, when it comes to aging, you can basically put people into two groups. There are those who age rapidly and those who age slowly. I see stories on the news every so often about people who live a long time and studies done to find out why, but I haven't seen anything specifically about this difference in how people function at the same age, and isn't that really more important than just living longer? What good does it do to live to be one hundred if you spend the last twenty five years in a hospital bed?

Fortunately, there is some reliable information about how people end up in either group and, if you are in the fast-aging group, how you can change to get more into the slow-aging one. Of course genetics plays a big role, but not as big as many people think. I've known people including my parents who lived a lot longer than their parents and I've known people who lived a more healthy and active life than their parents at the same age.

So if you thing you are going to end up as one of those people who is gray and stooped, and walks very slowly, probably with the aid of a cane, at age 65, or you are one of those people already, there are things you can do to make it better.

  1. Reduce stress. Stress in our lives is a major contributor to aging, so we should do whatever we can to minimize it. Take walks in the park, pet a dog, hug a cat, listen to relaxing music. Anything that helps you relax and get rid of the stress. And stay grounded, literally (read the book Earthing for details).

  2. Eat sensibly. That doesn't mean you have to give up everything you like, just practice moderation. Pizza is OK sometimes, as long as you are eating fresh fruits and veggies most of the time. And obesity makes you age faster, so keep your weight down.

  3. Exercise regularly. It doesn't have to be a Mr. America workout at Gold's Gym, just taking walks, jogging , swimming, riding a bike, etc. will do nicely.

  4. Practice spiritual development techniques. What does that have to do with aging? A lot more than you might think. First, when you develop spiritually, you tend to be less stressed. Second, you will be happier and laugh more. Third, studies have shown that when people are practicing REAL spiritual development techniques, they sometimes experience a phenomena where time slows down for them. This isn't just a mental thing, but an actual physical thing. Some studies have shown that, when an advanced spiritual person does the techniques while wearing a very accurate watch, the watch will be two or three minutes slow when he finishes. This isn't just a strange effect on the watch, but that time is actually slowing down for this person. Granted, it is only adding a few minutes a day, but it is only one indication of the physical benefits that come from practicing spiritual growth techniques, not to mention the more important spiritual benefits.
