Greed and Awakening

Your nation supposes that we, like the white people, cannot live without bread and pork and beer. But you aught to know that He, the Great Spirit and Master of Life has provided...for us in these spacious lakes...and woody mountains.” ~Pontiac

Actually, God has provided for all of us regardless of our skin color, race, or creed. So why are so many doing without? Why do children starve, or die of malnutrition, in a world where there is an abundant supply of healthy, natural food? Why do people die of illnesses that can be easily cured if they could see a doctor and could afford to pay for his services? Why do some people freeze to death while others have more warm clothes than they know what to do with? Greed. That is the answer: greed. I could say greed and indifference to the suffering of others, but being greedy implies that. Great spiritual people have always been opposed to greed. The Bible lists it as a deadly sin, though some preachers these days, such as the well known Bishop Long, insist it is a virtue. Jesus spoke against greed, as did Buddha and St. Francis, and Gandhi and Sister Teresa, just to name a few, yet there are those who claim to have religious beliefs, yet still treat greed as a virtue.

The news media spends days covering the death of the CEO of a large corporation. Masters of greed like Donald Trump are given TV shows and practically worshiped as gods. A person who hoards old newspapers, books or magazines to the point where he can hardly walk around his house because of the clutter is labeled a hoarder and put on TV so everyone can laugh at him, but a hoarder of money is worshiped as a hero.

People just can't seem to understand that, when God provides enough for everyone to live in reasonable comfort and health, that when the greedy take far more than they actually need, or have any right to, then others must do without.

That is starting to change, at least. While some disagree, such as those who thought Gaddafi was a hero because he built schools in poor villages, with money he got by robbing and killing the owners of that money, those involved in the Occupy Wall Street movement are seeing things differently, as have spiritual people for many centuries. And, while spiritual people know they cannot end greed overnight, we know that, as the truth continues to be revealed and accepted, things will get better.

But also, the poor need to remember as Pontiac and Jesus and others have said, God will provide, but we have to trust in Him, rather than the institutes of man.
