The Gift
The fields are damaged by weeds, mankind is damaged by hatred: therefore a gift bestowed on those who do not hate brings great reward.
The fields are damaged by weeds, mankind is damaged by vanity: therefore a gift bestowed on those who are free from vanity brings great reward.
The fields are damaged by weeds, mankind is damaged by lust: therefore a gift bestowed on those who are free from lust brings great reward.” ~The Dhammapada
Many would disagree with the first sentence regarding passion as they thing that passion is a good thing if the thing you are passionate about is something good, and they are correct, but what is of concern here is that passion for something Earthly, something material, is an attachment to the material world and those seeking spiritual enlightenment must free themselves from attachments to material things. Of course, that is much easier said than done, so we often have to start by channeling our passion into doing good things on Earth first until we grow in spirit enough to free ourselves from those attachments.
But what sort of gift are we talking about here where the passionless, the one who doesn't hate, the one who isn't vain, the one who isn't lustful will receive it? This gift is not of money or jewels. It is not a gift of land or titles. For one who has given up negative and materialistic pursuits and desires, such gifts would not be useful or welcomed. The gift to those who live without these negative things is the gift of awakening their eternal spirit and soul so that they may nurture it and become enlightened. It is the one gift God offers us and sadly, many prefer a new car or a big house and turn it down.
