Natural Healing: Kola Nut
Kola Nut is best known as the flavoring agent that gave us Coca Cola and other cola drinks, although the version sold today does not contain any kola nut, just a synthetic flavor of kola.
The kola nut is high in caffeine and so is often used as a stimulant. It kept tired soldiers moving. It restores vitality. It also helps curb hunger, so is often chewed in poorer countries to relieve hunger. It is also used to treat weakness and seasickness. It is sometimes used to help alcoholics get off of alcohol. Kola nut is also reputed to be an effective nerve tonic. It also improves depression, anxiety and weak emotions. It helps strengthen a weak heart. Although it is used to curb hunger, when chewed before a meal it aids digestion. It sharpens mental focus and is claimed to be an aphrodisiac. It is sometimes used to improve male potency. It is used for migraine headaches and to treat asthma in children.
WARNINGS: AS kola nut is high in caffeine, taking it together with other caffeine sources such as coffee is not recommended. Chewing the actual nut, as is done in parts of Africa, can discolor the teeth.
