A Holy Man is Still a Man

There is no path through the air, a man is not a Samana1 outwardly. The world delights in vanity, the Tathagatas (the Buddhas) are free from vanity.
There is no path through the air, a man is not a Samana outwardly. No creatures are eternal; but the awakened (Buddha) are never shaken.” ~The Dhammapada

Some people expect very little of preachers and holy men, mostly because they consider them all frauds or, if not exactly frauds, just ordinary people who have felt a calling to preach. And with some ministers, they are correct in that belief.

On the other hand, there are those who expect too much of their ministers, gurus, prophets and spiritual teachers. They expect them to be supermen. To be completely beyond the weaknesses of mortal men. To have the absolute perfect solution to every problem that arises. That is unrealistic because, while holy men are different (the real ones are anyway), they are also still human. While they are much better than most of us at listening to the angels and Beings of Light advising them, sometimes they listen to the ego instead and make a mistake. Sometimes a holy man does listen, but doesn't understand correctly what he is supposed to do. Sometimes, a holy man is being guided by visions and, as I have said before, the correct interpretation of visions and dreams is a tricky matter. It is very easy for even the best spiritual teachers to interpret something wrong. And sometimes, the powers that be simply choose not to give any advice on a matter that is not their concern, so the holy man is on his own and nearly as prone to mistakes as the rest of us. Being an enlightened individual is something that is happening on the inside, on the spiritual level, not on the physical level, so on the physical level, he is still subject to gravity, disease, and other physical conditions.

So if you find a spiritual teacher or guru you can really trust, listen to what he says, but don't abandon him the first time he makes a simple human error.

1 Samana or Shamana is a wandering monk, or holy man. One on the path to enlightenment.
