Listen to Reason, Not Nonsense
Even though a Gatha (poem) be a thousand (of words), but made up of senseless words, one word of a Gatha is better which if a man hears, he becomes quiet.
Though a man recite a hundred Gathas made up of senseless words, one word of the law1 is better, which if a man hears, he becomes quiet.” ~The Dhammapada
It seems today that people love to talk and love to listen to others talk. Unfortunately, the ones who do the most talking seem to have the least to say, and that appears to be what many prefer. If somebody puts a video on youtube that is ten minutes of absolute nonsense, it will get a million views in a month, but post a video that has something meaningful and valuable to say, and it get two hundred views or so. Just look at the speeches and debates taking place for the presidential candidates. It seems that the more ridiculous the statements and impossible the promises, the more that candidate is liked and if a candidate makes sensible and intelligent statements, he drops in the polls!
The above quote from the Dhammapada though, is talking about spiritual matters, so that is somewhat different. Here, when we talk about a speech of a thousand senseless words, it is more about preachers and gurus who can talk up a storm, but are not really saying anything useful. They are not teaching people how to awaken their immortal souls and communicate with God and the Beings of Light so that they can become fully enlightened. Some preachers can dance around the stage, shout and scream, and work up total emotional frenzy in an audience, but emotionalism is not spirituality, not even close. As the quoted passages indicate, a few words of truth causes a person to become quiet and contemplative, to listen intently and, in so doing, take a first step toward a spiritual awakening.
1. Gods Law is what is meant here, not manmade laws.
