Natural Healing: Dill
Dill is another herb that is primarily used as a flavoring spice (dill pickles), but also has healing properties. Both the leaves, which are often referred to as dill weed, and the seeds are used.
Its primary healing use is for digestive problems. It relieves cramps and stomach pain and reduces bloating and gas. It can help nursing mothers to produce sufficient milk and, at the same time, reduce colic in the babies. It is said to help stop hiccups. Soaking your fingers in dill tea is said to make the nails stronger. It aids those with loss of appetite. Dill is often included in natural cold formulas because of it's ability to sooth the stomach and intestines. It also helps treat fever. It is sometimes used to treat bronchitis and hemorroids. It helps fight infections and nerve disorders. Dill seed can be held in the mouth to help reduce mouth and throat pain and swelling or just to reduce bad breath. In ancient Rome, gladiators were given food with dill added to give them extra strength and stamina. It is sometimes used as a sleep aid. It is said to aid the liver and gall bladder. It can be used in a head wash to get rid of lice. Some claim it is useful in fighting obesity. Limited research indicates it may help reduce cholesterol. In some African countries, dill is chewed to treat headaches. It helps improve some eye problems.
Warnings: There are no known side effects, but those on a low salt diet should not use it often as dill has a high sodium content.
Note: I have been writing about medicinal herbs for years under the heading "Healing Herbs". I have decided to change it to "Natural Healing" so I can include other types of natural healing in these posts.
