Living With Fools

If a traveler does not meet with one who is his better, or his equal, let him firmly keep to his solitary journey; there is no companionship with a fool.

If a fool be associated with a wise man even all his life, he will perceive the truth as little as a spoon perceives the taste of soup.
If an intelligent man be associated for one minute only with a wise man, he will soon perceive the truth as the tongue perceives the taste of soup.” ~The Dhammapada

I know that I have said on this blog before that everyone has something to teach us and we need to be open to that, and that is still true. Nonetheless, when it comes to choosing our companions, our friends, those we socialize with or hang out with on a regular basis, we should not choose to be around foolish people. In this case though, I am not speaking of “foolish” in the sense of those who are not intellectuals or those who did not do well in school, but rather those who are spiritually foolish. By this, I mean those who remain unaware that constant negative thinking and behavior fills the world around them with harmful vibrations that simply attract more negativity to them. I am talking about people who can't comprehend that the spiritual worlds are very different from the physical ones.

If you talk to people about what they think will happen to them after they die, they often talk about a world that is much the same as the material, but better. A world where they can fish and hunt all day without having to buy a license! A world where they can play golf all day and never have to stop and let others play through! Those are descriptions of just another material world, not a spiritual one, but many people can simply not understand that. They are the spiritual fools and you not only waste your time by trying to wake them up, you also endanger yourself because, in a sense, this type of foolishness is contagious.

Of course, you shouldn't shun anyone or tell them to stay away from you because your spiritual and they are not, but you shouldn't spend a lot of time around such people.
