An Ideal World

Different people and different groups have very different ideas about what an ideal world would be. The ARA folks say an ideal world is one in which everybody carries at least one gun. Then, since everyone can defend themselves, no one would dare pull out a gun because others would do the same and shoot him. This world would therefore be a very peaceful one, they believe, even if only because everyone lives in fear of his neighbor.

Atheists have there concept of an ideal world. It is one in which no religion is tolerated, no churches are permitted to exist, and all symbols or religion are to be destroyed. The rulers, by whatever title they are known, will not profess to owe allegiance to any deity, or even to accept there there is any Supreme Being. This ideal world is essentially what existed in the USSR where all religion was illegal, but somehow, that abnormal state of existence just couldn't be maintained for long.

The ideal world of the Evangelical Christians is one in which science and free thinking is not permitted. It is a world totally governed by the Bible, or rather, their interpretation on the Bible. It is a world in which no one can be elected to any public office, unless that person is an Evangelical Christian. And, at any hint that a person in public office were to accept such scientific nonsense as the idea of evolution or that the Earth is billions of years old, that person would lose his position and possibly be burned at the stake. That ideal world already exists in places like Iran, just with a different religion.

Scientists, some of them anyway, see an ideal world as one in which science reigns supreme. No one argues against scientific facts or widely accepted theories. There will be no artistic or creative silliness allowed. Art just cannot be scientific after all. Flowers will be appreciated for there ability to sooth and heal, to procreate, to attract insects, etc. but never for their beauty. And no one would waste time watching a sunset! I think that's the world my dog lives in.

My ideal world is the one that some of our forefathers planned for when they founded this nation. One in which people of all faiths, as well as those with no faith, could live together in harmony and learn from each other. A world in which the politicians listen to the people and represent them for their benefit rather than for his own self-interests. It seems like we have moved far from that plan in recent decades, but that will change soon.
