Healing Herbs: Manuka
Manuka oil has been used for centuries by the Maori people of New Zealand. It is used to treat urinary tract problems and to reduce fevers. The leaves of the plant were boiled in water and the steam inhaled to fight colds. Manuka actually has stronger antibacterial and anti-fungal ingredients than tea tree oil. It has even been found to work against some microbes that have developed immunity to antibacterial drugs. It is used to treat skin abrasions, boils, acne, burns, cold sores, dermatitis, oily skin, ringworm, sunburn and other skin problems. It is used for varicose vein ulcers. It is effective against athletes foot and nail fungus. A few drops added to your shampoo treats scalp itch and dandruff. Rub a little on the feet to get rid of foot odor. It reduces the itching and swelling of insect bites. It soothes ache muscles and joints.
Manuka honey is used primarily to aid in healing wounds. Unlike drugs, it doesn't damage cells in the process. Like the oil, it is also anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory. It is sometimes used on sunburn and poison ivy.
Internally, manuka is used for various digestive problems including peptic ulcers, stomach flu, intestinal infection and diarrhea.
In aromatherapy, it is used to aid in reducing stress and encouraging relaxation. It reduces allergies and skin problems caused by stress and anxiety.
Warning: overdoses can be toxic, especially when taken internally, so follow directions.
