Being Human
Men don't achieve their own manhood, alas, oh alas! Alas!” ~D. H. Lawrence
Flowers don't dream of being trees and they certainly don't wish to become algae. Squirrels don't dream of being dogs and being able to live indoors and get fed by humans. Neither do they dream of being garden slugs. Flowers are busy enough being the best flowers they can be. Squirrels are very content to be squirrels and cats are happy to be cats.
Only humans dream of being something else or simply wish to be something else. This is not necessarily a bad thing if you are dreaming of being something higher, something greater than you are now, but first you have to learn how to be the best human you can be.
The strangest thing to me is people who wish to be something less than human. I know a lot of people might jokingly say they wish they were a cat or a dog and could just sit at home all day and not have to go to work or school, but that's not what I'm talking about. There are people who seriously wish they they were wild animals running loose in the forest, not having to worry about anything (except hunters, fires, floods, droughts, disease, etc.), having no responsibilities, no regrets. They wish they were lions, or wolves, or rhinos, never bunnies or gazelles.
Of course people who want to be something else usually feel this way because they are not satisfied with what they are. They think they should be more and, in a sense, they are correct. We all have a higher self and that is what we should aspire to become. That higher self is spiritual and immortal. It is not a predatory animal, it is not even a flower, it's a spirit and it is your true self. And we are capable of becoming that higher self if we make the effort to develop our spiritual faculties with the help of God.
