Drugs and Spiritual Growth

"The Mystery Schools of antiquity ... gave out deep esoteric knowledge, but at the cost of enormous labor. However, there existed among those teachers certain irresponsible ones who were rash enough to support their endeavors with drugs and poisons in order to give the illusion to their disciples of hastening their flight to the heights. But it is only an illusory push into the superconscious that drugs give; in actuality the mind is brought into a state of trance. ... Impulsion into spiritual realms can never occur artificially by means of drugs." ~Lilo Linne

Throughout the history of religion and spirituality, there have been those who used drugs of various types to aid them in having what was supposedly spiritual visions.

The limited records of ancient shaman indicate they used herbs or mushrooms to help them enter a trance.  Many believe now that the strange artworks found in some ancient caves depicting unknown animals or half human, half animal chimeras are depictions of the visions these shaman had.  It should be obvious that these depiction are not of spiritual things but of lower-level beings: demons.  So they shaman did not gain access to higher, spiritual dimensions by taking these drugs.

In other times and other places, similar drugs were used.  Even today there are people who believe that using drugs is a quick shortcut to spiritual development. The books of Carlos Castaneda are an example of this.
In truth, I can't think of a single person who, through the use of drugs, has achieved a high state of spiritual development.  On the other hand, those like Jesus, Buddha, St. Francis, etc. who did achieve high states of enlightenment, never used drugs to do it.

Unfortunately, we are living in an age when everyone wants shortcuts and quick solutions but, when it comes to spiritual enlightenment, there are no shortcuts and, if there were, it would be unwise to use them because too rapid spiritual growth that reveals too quickly the true nature of us and our world, often results in insanity.  So practice those spiritual growth techniques your teacher gives you and don't look for shortcuts.
