Healing Herbs: Melissa

        Melissa is an oil made from Lemon Balm. It is best known for it's antiseptic properties when used on the skin. It is an aid to overcoming cravings and addictions, particularly with alcohol and tobacco. It helps you stay calm and serene and can aid in controling fear and depression. It can fight off many viruses including flu, herpes, smallpox and mumps. Diluted melissa oil can be used to treat cold sores. It is helpful in treating nausia and indigestion. It can also lower blood pressure and slow down a racing heart. It aids in treating agitation in the elderly who have dimentia. It has been shown to benefit those with mild to moderate Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). It can repel mosquitoes. It improes mental performance. It is sometimes used to treat tension headaches. It is sometimes combined with other herbs to treat insomnia.

In aromatherapy melissa is used to ease panic attacks. It can aid those dealing with grief.  It is calming and reduces stress.

Warning: pure melissa oil can seriously irritate the skin so should always be heavily diluted.
