Healing Herbs: Tea Tree Oil
Tea Tree Oil has become a very popular herbal product in the past two or three decades. The tea tree it come from (Melaleuca alternifolia) is not the same tree from which England gets in national drink (Camellia sinensis). This tree is found only in a small section of Australia. One of the primary uses of tea tree oil is to fight bacterial infections. It is also antiviral and anti-fungal. It is used as first aid for many skin irritations, cuts, bruises, insect bites, mild burns, etc. It is effective against nail fungus, athlete's foot and ringworm. It also fights yeast infections such as Candida. It helps get rid of warts. It repels or kills mites, lice, mosquitoes and some other insects. As an ingredient in shampoo, it not only prevents head lice, but also dandruff. It has some pain killing ability so is soothing on sunburn and insect bites. It aids in wound healing. It has been shown to be fairly effective in fighting acne. Small amounts of the oil are sometimes used in aquariums to fight or prevent fish fungus.
It can help fight colds and flu by soothing sore throats and helping to expel mucus. You can make a gargle or mouthwash by adding three drops to a cup of warm water (do not swallow it). The indigenous people in the area of Australia where it grows, crush the leaves and inhale the fragrant oil to treat colds and coughs. Another way to do it is to add a few drops to bath water or put a few drops in a steam inhaler. Using it in bath water, or showering with a soap that contains tea tree oil, will also reduce body odor. It aid in treating sinus infections, also by inhaling the vapors or it may be added to some natural nasal sprays. For ear aches, add a few drops to olive oil and put a drop or two in the ear. To get a live tick off a pet, put a drop of the oil on it, then wait twenty minutes and remove it if it didn't fall off already.
In Aromatherapy, it is used to promote energy and relieve anxiety.
Precautions: Tea Tree Oil should not be taken internally. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, sleepiness, confusion, and possible coma if you take enough of it. It is recommended that pregnant and breast-feeding woman avoid using it completely.
