Random Thoughts 7-10-2011

Sorry Nathan's and friends, I am not at all impressed with someone who can scarf down a six-day supply of food in the ten minutes it takes for 150 children in the world to starve to death.

I wonder if anyone has done a study of how the children of religious people end up being atheists? Is it because they see so much hypocrisy in the church their parents belong to that they think all religion is like that? It is because they don't see much good coming out of the churches? Or is it a simple case of rebelling against their parents?

Another interesting syncronicity this week.  Soon after I arrived for a family reunion, I was playing a video game on my laptop and hit a bonus called The Family Reunion.

I would love to be able to travel by rail rather than fly these days, but that just isn't realistic these days because our passenger rail system is such a joke. If you are traveling between two major cities like Washington to Boston, you are OK, but when I checked on the possibility of traveling from Washington to Bangor, Maine, I found that I would have to take a high-speed (sort of) train as far as Boston, than a slow train into Maine, then a bus for the final leg—no trains available all the way. That is ridiculous.

Wouldn't it be nice if the heroes kids look up to included some spiritual teachers and leaders rather than just actors and professional athletes?

I could not think of being unkind, even to a mortal enemy. It would hurt me. I see so much unkindness in the world, and there is no excuse for me to add to it. When you love God, and when you see God in every soul, you cannot be mean. If someone behaves hurtfully toward you, think of the best ways to behave lovingly toward him..." ~Paramahansa Yogananda

Since I am in Maine for a few days, I am posting a photo from there today.
