Random Thoughts 7-3-2011

There is nothing like a disaster to make people forget petty differences and work together for the good of all. It didn't take long though for that to wear off for some in Springfield, Massachusetts. Less than a month after a major tornado hit that town, a gang of bigots attacked a gay man for no reason other than they were bored and he was gay.

I was surprised that one of the things shut down in Minnesota because the state government is broke was the state lottery. Don't state lotteries get their operating and administrative costs paid for by the sale of tickets? If not, they should.

In the past few months, I've gotten used to writing one blog article per day and posting it the next day. Now, I am trying to write two a day to get ready for going on a trip to Maine next week.

I hope everyone has an enjoyable Independence Day weekend.  Here in the Washington D.C. suburbs, we will be celebrating in the usual way with thousands of kids setting off tons of illegal fireworks with several being seriously injured by them.

Consciousness cannot be known by the mind. The mind is an object. It does not know anything. It is itself known by consciousness.” ~Rupert Spira

A man is suing his graduate law school for his failure to get a job after graduating.

A woman is suing Chuck E Cheese because she thinks the children's games there are teaching kids to gamble.

The new manager of an apartment building was planning repairs and improvements that he expected would make his tenants happy. One woman, who had previously requested some of the improvements, sued for 1/2 million when he posted notices of them claiming emotional distress. Sadly, due to our messed up legal system, the guy settled for paying her a settlement of several thousand (at the advice of the insurance company) because it was cheaper than going through with a lengthy trial.

An eleven-year-old girl on roller blades was hit by a young doctor riding a bicycle. The doctor sued the girl for getting in his way. The girl's mother refused to settle and it took four years to get the trial over with. The girl was found not negligent, but by then the family had spent thousands on lawyers.
