The Truth About Free Will
“The human will is free, ultimately, to choose one of two things:
either to stay connected with the tree of life, and submit
the human will to the flush of the vaster impulsion of the tree;
or else to sever the connection, to become self-centered, self-willed, self-motivated –
and subject, really, to the draught of every motor-car or the kicking tread of every passer-by.” ~D. H. Lawrence
Our societies today celebrate human free will as if it were the most wonderful aspect of humanity. Yea! Humans can do whatever they want to do, whatever their will tells them to do and, if they are atheists, they don't even have to deal with that nasty morality crap! How wonderful! But is it, really? What has it gotten us? A planet on the brink of death because of our environmental irresponsibility. Wars that have killed millions in the last century alone. Marvelous inventions that help us live in fantasies so we don't have to deal with the reality of the world we have created.
Spiritual teachers, gurus, prophets and avatars have always known and taught that the whole idea of free will for humans is both dangerous and grossly exaggerated. As Lawrence points out, our free will really only allows us to make a choice between two things: choose to be connected to the Tree of Life (also known as the spiritual sun or the Sun of Righteousness), the voice of God; or listen to the voice of Satan and his associates. Those are the only choices. The unfortunate thing about it is that, if you don't bother to choose, Satan will be happy to choose for you and get you to serve his will even if you are totally unaware that you are doing so. So use your free will by choosing to serve the Will of God.
