Healing Herbs: Bacopa

                Bacopa Monnieri is a popular herb in Ayurvedic medicine. It falls into a category called “Brahmi” meaning it benefits the mind and spirit. It is primarily recommended as an aid to nerve function and memory. It is also said to promote learning and aid in reducing stress and anxiety. It primarily benefits brain functions and therefore improves conditions such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, Epilepsy and ADHD. It improve our ability to concentrate. It is said to help prevent some of the damage caused by smoking or other forms of tobacco use. 
    In India, it has been shown that children who took Bacopa scored higher on an IQ exam than those who didn't. It is also used to treat allergies and fight free radicals. In Ayervedic medicine, it is also used to treat asthma. It is anti-fungal. It may prevent some gastric ulcers by killing the bacteria that causes them. It is also useful for treating irritable bowel syndrome. It aids sleep. It is also used as a laxative and diuretic. It is also used to treat diabetes and as a heart tonic. It is used to treat fevers and arthritis. It is also used in India to treat bronchitis. Some research also suggests it may be a useful treatment for cancer.

Bacopa has not been shown to have any harmful side effects. Some of its benefits, such as improved memory and learning, require taking bacopa for at least three months.
