Spiritual and Social Aid
Many people confuse being spiritual with being socially responsible. They think they are are doing spiritual work when they are doing social work. They feed the hungry, clothe the naked, provide health care to the sick and shelter to the homeless. They adopt unwanted children. They send their old things off in boxes to poor foreign countries. They provide scholarships to help others get an education.
All of these are very good things to do. Very socially responsible things, but they are not spiritual things. Spiritual people place the emphasis on saving souls, not bodies, not minds. Sometimes, though, you have to take care of those social issues first. It is difficult to get people interesting in saving their souls when their immediate concern is saving their bodies from illness or starvations. So it is fine to help people with those things but, if you wish to be a spiritual person, you can't stop their. You have to help people save their souls, by working on the development of your own spirit and soul and by teaching others to do the same. Or, if you you are not ready to be a spiritual teacher yourself, you can steer then toward your own spiritual teacher or the spiritual school you attend.
Some people think the spiritual are callous because they place this emphasis on saving souls rather than participating in projects to feed the hungry and provide shelter to the poor, but the spiritual are saving (or at least trying to save) that which is immortal in us rather than that which is mortal and is going to end one day anyway, no matter what you do.
