Healing Herbs: Blue Vervain

            Blue Vervain was considered an all-around tonic and healing herb by some Native American tribes. It is useful for treating diarrhea, killing worms and other parasites and as an expectorant. The infusion is used for bladder infections and kidney stones. As a poultice, it is used for headaches, earaches and rheumatism. It is also used to treat colds and cough. It promotes sweating which helps reduce fever. It aids in cleansing and detoxifying the whole body. It aids gout by helping to remove uric acid from the body. It aids the liver by cleansing and detoxifying it. It is a mild sedative that can help people relax in stressful situations. It can aid menstrual flow. Externally, it can be used to promote healing of sores, bruises, cuts and scrapes. Vervain is often used to treat chronic bronchitis. Taken before bed, it can help you get to sleep. It is said to be a good tonic to take when recovering from illness and has been used to aid in recovery from anorexia. 
    One interesting old wives tale says that if you wash your hands in vervain tea, anyone you touch will fall in love with you.
    Blue Vervain should not be used when pregnant.
