Censorship
set up to judge between between life and death.
For no living sun man would be a censor,
he'd just laugh.”~D. H. Lawrence
Most of us think that some censorship is a good thing, and perhaps it is. The problem is, we always want to censor someone else's behavior, never our own. As a result, we tend to censor that which is not common practice and allow just about anything as long as a majority, or at least a very sizable minority, are doing it.
We can all agree, as an example, that child pornography and sexual exploitation of children is evil and deserves to be censored and any adult involved deserves to be imprisoned or worse. Yet, when we look back in history, we will find to our horror that there have been times when the use of children as sex slaves has been excepted by the social order of the time.
Even today, we can find quite a bit of difference in what is considered acceptable in various parts of the world. The example often given is how a women would react if a strange man accidentally walked into a ladies shower and saw her naked. While there would be some individual variations, most Arab woman would cover their face, European women would try to cover up below the waist, while American women would try to hide everything except the face! Or, for a religious example, Christians have no objections to drawing or paintings of Jesus, but Muslims consider it wrong to depict the prophet no matter how complimentary the depiction may be.
I'm not trying to criticize any religion or social order, just pointing our there there are many differences in what gets censored based on time, religion, society, etc. The thing we have to be careful of is that we don't let people be censored because of their political, religious or spiritual beliefs. Such censorship always leads to trouble eventually. So as Lawrence points out, let the spiritual sun be your guide and that problem won't develop.
