Healing Herbs: Angelica

                Angelica is a herb that has been used as a general tonic for centuries. It is an especially good tonic for women, children and the elderly. It is the European cousin of dong-quai. The root is the most used part of the plant, but also the leaves and seeds are used. It contains quite a few vitamins and volatile oils. It strengthens the heart and is said to help one loose their taste for liquor. It can be used as a sedative and to calm an upset stomach. It can be used as a gargle for sore throats, colds and mouth sores or swollen gums. It is used to treat colds and bronchitis. It is used as an expectorant. It can also be used externally for broken bones, arthritis, swelling and itchy skin. Angelica is also used for treating tumors and boils. It can aid flatulence and loss of appetite. It is used to treat urinary tract infections and aids circulation problems by increasing blood flow to the extremities. Historically, it was used to treat cases of poisoning and infections of all sort. It is used in Europe to treat fevers, particularly typhoid. It has antibiotic properties. 
    Angelica is also used as a flavoring agent and in aromatherapy. In aromatherapy, it is used to aid the nervous system and help those suffering from anorexia or sudden unexpected weight loss, anemia, migraine and stress. 
    Angelica root oil should not be used when you are planning to spend time outside in bright sunlight since is is phototoxic and increases the chance of getting sunburn.
