Temporary Worries
“The sky is not oneness with clouds. Clouds are temporary; they come and go.
…
Our mind is like that. It's nature is clear light and the obscurations—ignorance, attachment, anger and other disturbing thoughts—are temporary, not permanent.”~ Lama Zopa Rinpoche
We tend to worry too much about the temporary things in life. We worry about a storm, which will pass. We worry about an injury, which will heal. We worry about a bad politician, who will soon be out of office.
I am not suggesting we ignore such things, but give them appropriate priority for something that is temporary. When we pay too much attention to temporary things and temporary events, we find ourselves stressed out and fully under control of our ego.
Emotional thoughts like anger, jealousy, sadness, etc. are also temporary. Ignoring them may not be possible, but again, we need to put them in perspective with regard to the fact that these are temporary conditions, or should be.
We should strive to never let emotions keep us from clear thinking and we should strive to never let intellectual thinking allow us to neglect our spiritual growth. Yes, keeping your body healthy and alive is important, but not as important as your immortal spirit and soul. Yes, getting out of the storm before you get soaked, or hit by lightning, is important, but not so important that you should spend your life hiding under a bed so the storms can't get you. And doing what your ego wants is OK sometimes, but it must not be allowed to take control because it will convince you that anything spiritual, which it cannot understand because of it's nature, is worthless. Then you die and learn otherwise, when it is too late.
