Healing Herbs: Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle has been used for over two thousand years as a remedy for a variety of health problems. It is most often used as a liver tonic and for gallbladder problems. It is said to aid the liver by protecting it from toxins such a s alcohol and drugs like acetaminophen. It also aids with diseases of the spleen in a similar way. It was also traditionally used to stimulate production of breast milk in women.
Milk thistle is also used in the treatment of viral hepatitis. It is also used to counter the effects of poisonous death cap mushrooms. Some recent studies indicate that milk thistle may help with some types of cancer by slowing down the growth of cancer cells. Some recommend it for reducing cholesterol. It soothes bladder and kidney irritations. It is an aid for those with type 2 diabetes. It stimulates circulation of blood and energy in the entire body. It is sometimes recommended to aid the symptoms of varicose veins. It is also used for bloating, gas, and stomach aches. It stimulates appetite.  Milk thistle is also used to treat some of the symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, and night sweats.
Milk thistle can cause allergic reactions in those who are allergic to closely related plants (ragweed, marigold, etc.). It can also cause diarrhea and upset stomach in some people. It should not be used by those with HIV/AIDS because it may decrease the effectiveness of the drugs taken for that illness.
