Healing Herbs: Nigella Sativa (Black Seed)

          Nigella sativa, also known as black seed, nutmeg flower or fennel flower, is a medicinal herb used for many health problems. It is highly regarded in Islam as the Prophet Muhammad once stated that the black seed can heal every disease—except death. The oil of the seeds is what is used. It is used to treat headache, toothache and insomnia. It is also used for arthritis and diabetes. It is used to treat gall bladder problems and respiratory problems. It aids digestion and reduces gas in the stomach and intestines. It fights intestinal parasites. It is an aid to poor circulation. It is used to treat tumors in the abdomen, eyes and liver. Recent research shows it is especially useful to help those with asthma. It stimulate metabolism. It helps lower cholesterol levels. It helps strengthen the immune system in those with HIV. A study in Germany found it very effective in helping those with various allergies. Since it seems to have an anti-histamine effect, it should also be useful for poison ivy and poison oak treatment. It is useful in treating high blood pressure. For sinus problems, add the oil to a vapor bath or steam inhaler. For colds and flu, mix the oil with lemon, honey and hot water and drink. For tired or sore leg muscles, just massage a little of the oil into the area. Externally, it is used for warts, acne and many other skin problems.
