We Are a World of Addicts

I haven't yet read Jane Velez-Mitchell's new Book “Addict Nation”, but from what I've heard about it, I have to agree with her. We have become a nation of addicts, although it's not limited to the U. S. A. Many other countries are just as bad. Now many people will immediately say they are not addicts, but we are not just talking about those who are addicted to illegal drugs or alcohol. Addicts are also those addicted to prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Someone who has to take a pill to wake up in the morning and another to get to sleep at night is an addict. Addicts are those who continue to smoke cigarettes while a half million die of it each year. And we have sex addicts who are addicted to having sex and porn addicts addicted to watching others have sex. We have addicts who are addicted to collecting certain objects like Emelda Marcos and her infamous shoe collection. We have the tech addicts who will stand in line for two days to get the latest model cell phone only to trade it in six months later for another one. And how many people who just bought high definition televisions a year or two ago are now rushing to buy the new 3D HD TVs? Even those of us who can't get started in the morning without a cup or two of coffee are addicts. There may be a very few people who are not addicted to anything, but nearly all of us are addicted to something.
The real question then is Why? Why are nearly all of us addicted to something? The answer is simple: Satan. We are addicts because it is what Satan wants us to be. When we are addicted to something, anything, in the physical world, it acts as an anchor preventing us from moving upward into higher, spiritual realms. So one of the first things we all need to do to help us achieve spiritual enlightenment is to discover what we are addicted to (be honest about it) and overcome those addictions, with help if necessary.
