Things as Vampires

Most of us love to have things. We want new things. We want more things. We want new cars, new TVs, new cell phones, new computers, etc. We are never satisfied. To some degree, that is not our fault. Governments and corporations promote the idea that we are being good citizens by being good consumers. We are supposedly helping ourselves and our economy by consuming as much as we can.  But are we really?

New houses, new furniture, new streets, new clothes, new sheets,
everything new and machine-made sucks life out of us
and makes us cold, makes us lifeless
the more we have.” ~D. H. Lawrence

The life that things suck out of us is spiritual life, the only life that really matters because it is eternal. No matter how much wealth we have and how many houses or cars or shoes we have, when we die, none of that is going to be of any use to us and, contrary to popular belief, it probably won't be helpful to those who will inherit it when we die because people rarely appreciate something they get without earning it. What is useful to us when we die is to have an awakened and aware spirit and soul. That does not mean you have to live in poverty, but it does mean you have to value your soul and it's development more than you value your house, your car and your money. And to do the job of awakening your soul, you should seek the aid of a good spiritual teacher.
