A Child of the Universe

One of the lessons we must all learn to aid us in spiritual development is that we must, in certain ways, think like a child again. Children, especially very young children, haven't learned that much and are always open to new things. They haven't yet been brainwashed into a pattern of beliefs and disbeliefs. They haven't yet been told that some things are real and some are imaginary. As a result, they are eager to learn new things and open to ideas and beliefs that most adults be unwilling to accept.
Even before the internet, our brains were being bombarded with so much information that the only way we can make any sense of it is to decide in advance what information we will pay attention to and what information we will ignore. Some subjects may not interest so we ignore that information. I have no interest in knitting sweaters so information on that subject is automatically ignored by my brain.
This is necessary, but sometimes it means we block out information that is vital to our well being, especially information that is vital to our spiritual growth. We are told by the standard churches what to believe and anything outside of that is largely ignored. Or, if we are skeptics or atheists, we are told nothing is real without scientific proof and so ignore the whole spiritual world altogether.
So the difficulty for the spiritual teacher is that children are rarely interested in spiritual development and adults who are have established mental filters that block a lot of it out. That is why one of the first jobs of the spiritual teacher is to help us be more open in out thinking and in our beliefs so that we can accept the truth.
