Healing Herbs: Chia

Today, we all know of chia seed from the popular chia pets, but long before the chia pets, chia seed was used as a food and medicine, particularly by the Mayans, Aztec and Apaches (chia actually means “strength” in Mayan). Chia is a good source of digestible protein, vitamin C, and Omega-3 fatty acids.
The seeds are often mixed with water to make a gel. The gel can be used to help people loose weight by mixing it into food so you get less calories before you feel full. It is said to boost strength and endurance. The gel can also help regulate blood sugar since it slows down absorption of carbohydrates. Chia seed contains strontium which strengthens bones, teeth and cartilage. It absorbs toxins and helps cleanse the colon. It calms the nerves and improves memory. Chia seed also helps reduce high blood pressure. It is an aid for those with diabetes and it improves cardiovascular health. It is a great source of calcium for vegans or anyone who doesn't drink a lot of milk.
Like psyllium, chia is high in fiber, but, while some people complain that psyllium causes gas, chia helps prevent it. Chia gel can be used as a substitute for eggs in baking and fried foods that use egg as a binder. Add chia gel to pasta sauces and other foods to prevent or reduce acid reflux and heartburn.
Note: actual chia seeds are much smaller than they appear in the photo above.

It's true that we rarely hear about chia seeds. They are wonderful. I started using them a year or so ago. I add them to my oatmeal in the morning.
