New Clothes, New Friends
As a child grows, he has to keep getting new clothes to fit him. The same is true when you are growing spiritually but the “clothes” in this case is more complicated. As you grow more spiritual, you will have to avoid very negative and materialistic people and places. You will have to make new friends who are also developing their spiritual side. That doesn't mean you have to give up old friends you have known for years, but you may have to spend less time with them or face the consequences of loosing spiritual energy that you need to grow.
Sometimes, this happens automatically. You simply find yourself spending more time with others who are also spiritual, or at least not too materialistic. You may find yourself deciding to change jobs because the company you work for places too much emphasis on profit and not enough on satisfying customers needs. Sometime though, it doesn't happen automatically and you need to make a conscious effort to spend less time with materialistic and negative people and situations. Usually, the first thing you do is try to convince your old friends to start on a path of spiritual enlightenment along with you. When they indicate that they are not interested, you should take that as a sign to spend less time with that person and not as an excuse to stop your spiritual growth.
