Pretending to be Somebody Else

Have you ever pretended to be somebody your not? Pretended to be much wealthier then you really are at your high school reunion? Pretended to be married when the “spouse” you were with was actually a paid escort? Pretended to know a celebrity you never actually met?
A lot of people do things like that, but if you say you have never pretended to be somebody your not, your almost certainly lying. Lying to yourself as well as others. The reason is because most of us really don't know who we are.
We identify ourselves by the things around us. When someone asks, we identify ourselves by our job usually, or by some other part of our material life. We say: “I am a lawyer.”, “I am an engineer.”, “I am a mother.”, “I am a homeowner.”, etc. Or we identify with our physical bodies: “I am an old man.”, “I am a natural blond.”, “I am a teenager.”, etc. None of this is truly identifying who we really are, so we are pretending, or lying if you prefer, because we don't know, or forget, who we really are.
The real you is not some temporary condition such as your job or marital status. The real you is not even the physical body you are currently trapped in. The real you is spirit, a spirit with a soul (spiritual mind) trapped on a material plane in a material body. Just because you are trapped in matter doesn't mean you should identify with it. If you are to free yourself, your family and your world from this illusion, the first step is to remember who you really are and repeat it to yourself frequently: “I an an immortal spirit.”
