Rewriting History

You would think that history would be something that cannot be rewritten. Since history is supposed to be factual stories about the past, it should be fixed, unchangeable. Unfortunately, that isn't how written history works in many cases. As the experts are fond of telling us, history is written by the winners, not the losers so the history of wars—which sadly makes up a large part of human history—is almost always told exclusively from the point of view of the winner.
The rest of history fairs on no better. The people in power get to decide what should be in history books and what should not. Further, they decide how the story should be told, how it should be slanted. History is full of spin. So it should not be a surprise at all to find that much of the history of the Christian faith, especially the early part, is highly distorted.
One major belief of most Christians, based on what they read in the Bible, is that it was the Jews who wanted Jesus dead. It was supposedly the priests at the Jewish temple who first decided Jesus must die as he was becoming too influential. It was Herod, King of the Jews who supposedly ordered Jesus put to death while the nice, innocent, friendly Roman governor of the territory Pontius Pilate washed his hands of the death of “this innocent man”. All of this makes it appear that the Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus, but these “facts” leave out some things.
First, do you think the Romans would have allowed a powerful priesthood that acted much like a government to continue operating after they took over? Of course not. The real priests of the temple were put to death by the Roman soldiers and replaced with false ones who, while technically Jewish, were Roman sympathizers and swore allegiance to Caesar and his representative, the governor. Further, Herod also was allowed to hold his symbolic office as King only so long as his did exactly what the Roman governor told him to do. So those who ordered the death of Jesus may have been technically Jews, but were operating as part of the Roman government. So where did we get the highly distorted history from? From Emperor Constantine, the emperor who supposedly was converted to Christianity but, in fact, rewrote much of the Christian teachings when he helped put together the Bible making sure that the document would be much more sympathetic to Rome than was the truth.

Wonderful thoughts here. Many of us know what you said here but I think we tend to forget it at times.
You wrote "The rest of history fairs on better." I am sure you meant "no better" here but, of course, spell check wouldn't catch that.
    Keep on writing, my friend.
