Spiritual Symbols: Nakedness or Nudity

A lot of people, especially Christians of certain denominations, think that nakedness is something evil and the depiction of a naked person indicates that person is evil, or represents evil of some sort. I new one such person on a job I was working on about a dozen years ago who joined the health club next door to our building, as did many of us, but quit after a few weeks when she saw some women working out in outfits that showed their navel. That was simply too much nakedness for her.
Actually, being naked generally represents innocence and purity. One who if free from the grip of materialism and egotism. Good examples of nakedness in this sense are the drawings and paintings of two great spiritual poets: Khalil Gibran and William Blake. These artworks were clearly intended to represent innocence and freedom from the limitations of the world of matter as represented by clothing. Nakedness also represents casting away the bonds of convention and rejecting the opinions of the more materialistic persons to pursue a higher cause. In one tale called The Dancing of Usame, a woman gradually removes her clothing as she dances. Today, people would think she is a stripper, but this story represents the soul gradually freeing itself from the control of Ego and the material world.
