Know Your Friends

There are three friends that help us, and three that do us harm. The friends that help us are a straight [honest] friend, an outspoken friend, and a friend that has heard much. The friends that harm us are plausible friends, friends that like to flatter, and friends with a glib tongue” ~Confucius

Friends are a wonderful thing and those who have many friends are blessed. Even if you only have a few friends, you are blessed. Friends are like the family you choose for yourself. But not all friends are the same and not all friendships are the same and we have to take that into consideration. You have to recognize that some are wise, some are smart, some are honest, some are foolish. When you want someone to just hangout with, the foolish friends, the fun friends are a good choice. When you want advice about something important, the wise friends and the intellegent friends are the ones to talk to. When your feeling a little depressed about something, the friend who is always positive and complimentary about everything is a good person to be around, but when you want to go shopping for an expensive new gown to wear to an important event, you want the honest friend who will tell you which dress you look good in and won't tell you, “everything looks good on you!” which is very complimentary and nice, but doesn't help you make a decision. If your planning to make some investments for your future, the friend who has made good investments and always does well financially is the one to talk to, not the one who is always investing in get-rich-quick schemes where the only ones who get rich are the ones selling the scheme. And if your looking for spiritual advice, you need to talk to your more spiritual friends, not the very materialistic ones who will always be against anything spiritual. So enjoy your friends, but know them and know when to be with them and which ones to listen to.
