Arrogance and Humility

It is unfortunate that, in our world today, arrogance is seen as a virtue and humility as a sin. One TV commercial for cosmetics has a woman saying, “I'm worth it!”. Another recent entry has a business man upgrading his rental car and saying, “I deserve this”, to which the narrator replies, “Yes you do business pro, Yes you do!”, as if the man had accomplished something great by getting sent on a business trip.
Schools have jumped on the bandwagon and have made up a variety of dubious awards to give the kids so they will have plenty of self esteem. Sure, there is nothing wrong with a little self esteem, but it seems like it's being pushed with many young people to the point of arrogance and a feeling of entitlement. We see it when looking for a job. You can have a lot of experience and good references, but if you don't have enough arrogance to really sell yourself at a job interview, you don't get the job.
On the other hand, do you see anybody getting any recognition for humility? Any rewards for not bragging about your accomplishments? I don't see any of that. Oh, we may see some news story where some kid pulls another out of a burning building and the reporters note how he doesn't like being called a hero for doing what he thinks anyone would have done in the same situation, but other than that, you never hear of someone getting any recognition, in school, in business, or anywhere else for having humility. And that is very unfortunate because when it comes to spiritual development, God does want us to have a certain amount of self esteem, but he also want us to show humility. In short, you simply can't be a servant of God if you are arrogant, and you can't achieve spiritual enlightenment if you are not a servant of God.

It seems that the only way for people to get ahead today is to be arrogant and have allot of self-esteem. Unfortunatly, there seems to be no place anymore for humility or compassion. And how sad is that? The compition for jobs is so great now. And, unfortunatly, the ones who get those jobs are the ones who are the most arrogant with the most self-esteem. Humility and compassion just don't seem to matter to anyone anymore.

In some obs like sales and marketing, it makes sense.  In others like software, it doesn't.  Most good software people are not arrogant, but they are expected to be on an interview or they don't get the job.
