Spiritual Symbols: Maiden or Virgin
The symbolism of a young maiden is similar to that of a virgin, though not identical. A maiden generally symbolizes the wisdom and intuition gained by a spiritual person as he or she rises into higher levels of spiritual consciousness. It is one who has climbed upward from the lower levels of materialism to a level of spiritual wisdom. The maiden is also a symbol of femininity and the moon, specifically, the maiden represents the waxing moon while the mother represents the full moon and the old woman represents the waning moon.
A virgin is a very obvious symbol of innocence, but there is more to it. A virgin symbolizes one who has conquered or purified their lower, materialistic nature, and and is no longer controlled by earthly desires.
“For the congress of men for the procreation of children makes virgins women. But when God begins to associate with the soul, He brings it to pass that she who was formerly women becomes virgin again.” ~Philo
So when we are talking about this spiritual type of virginity, we are talking about one who may not be innocent in a physical or sexual sense, but who has, in a way, regained such innocence by giving up earthly ways and becoming a servant of God as Mary Magdalene did with Jesus. A virgin can also symbolize the innocent primordial soul before it descends into matter and becomes corrupt. Like the astrological symbol Virgo, a virgin also represents that which is natural and pure in spirit.
Since a maiden is often a virgin, these symbols obviously interrelate.
