Sins of the Fathers

The Bible says that the sins of the father will result in punishment for the sons (Exodus 20:5, Deuteronomy 5:9).  Does this really mean God is going to punish up for the mistakes of our parents or grand parents?  I don't think so.  What really happens is that, when we "sin", or behave badly, we change the world around us.  Obviously, that change is not going to be for the better.  And if nothing counters those changes, they remain to adversely affect the next generation and the one after that.  It's like the factory that dumped harmful chemicals into a hole in the ground for twenty or thirty years without harming anything, then the chemicals start seeping into the water and people in the area start dying.  So remember,  God may not punish your children and grand children for your bad behavior, but, without realizing it, you will.

That reminds me of that commercial that played for years when we were kids with the Indian standing in a polluted area with a tear running down his cheek. The damage we do to our planet with pollution and killing wildlife and destroying trees and rain forests and so on will all punish future generations. We often hear how important it is to live now and be in the moment which is true but we also have to do that with respect and concern for the future.

Yes the damage we do to the environment affects future generations.  We also need to remember that our "environment" isn't just physical.  It's also mental and spiritual.
