Surprising Results

Surprises can be a good thing, even with people who say they don't like surprises.  I don't mean surprises like getting on a crowded elevator wearing a hockey mask and carrying an axe.  Save that kind of nonsense for dumb TV shows.  I mean pleasant surprises.
A pleasant surprise doesn't have to be something big or expensive like buying your spouse a new car or a vacation (although those are fine also!), it can be something very small but unexpected.  Here are a few examples.
  • You admire a garden in your neighborhood that you pass by everyday on your walk.  You've never met the people who live in the house.  Tomorrow, before you go on your walk, just write on a piece of paper: "I love your garden!" and stick it in the mail box when you walk by.
  • You see a helium-filled balloon on display that you like.  Buy it and give it to someone.  It can be someone you know, or a stranger.
  • Complement somebody.
  • If your a kid, do something you usually only do when your parents tell you to, such as cleaning your room.

And don't forget to surprise yourself occasionally.  You might think that is impossible, but it isn't.  The way to surprise yourself is to learn something about yourself that you didn't already know.  You try something new such as eating some type of food you've never tried before and discovering you like it, or trying a new hobby and discovering you have a talent you didn't know about.
Also, surprise yourself by spending a few minutes before you go to bed by thinking about what you did that day, what happened to you, and how you reacted.  This can reveal things about you that you were not aware of.  Sometimes they are unpleasant things, but by becoming aware of them, you can take steps to correct them and become a better person.
