Philosophers Ancient and Modern
I often categorize posts on this blog as philosophy or write about philosophers. Unfortunately, there can be confusion about the use of that term because the ancients used it to mean something very different from the modern philosopher.
Today, a philosopher is an intellectual. He probably has an advanced degree from a university. He studies opinions, statistics and scientific theories, and then forms his philosophies based on these mental exercises.
The ancient philosophers such as: Socrates, Plato and Pythagoras; were very different. They were not intellectual so much as they were wise. Wisdom is often confused with intellectualism, but is very different. Wisdom comes primarily from Divine revelation, from Gnosis. A wise person, a true philosopher, doesn't guess at what is right or wrong, what is the correct solution to a problem, but knows. He knows with certainty because God knows with certainty and God is the source of Gnosis.
So, when I write about philosophy or philosophers, it is this ancient concept of philosopher that I am talking about: the spiritual philosopher, not the intellectual.
