Most of the major religions have a holy book associated with their teachings.  The Christians have the Bible, Jews have the Torah and Muslims have the Koran.  Other religions have holy books also, though not just one, such as the Hindus with The Bhagavad Gita, The Upanishads, and others.  Books are also mentioned within scripture, for example, the book with seven seals in Revelation.  In general, a book is a symbol of the universe and life.  An open book symbolizes learning, wisdom, revelation, and enlightenment.  A book can symbolize the quest for the Holy Grail, which is itself a symbol for the quest for enlightenment.  In Buddhism, a book symbolizes wisdom, knowledge, perfection or expression.  In Chinese Buddhism, a book is one of the "Eight Precious Things".  Jesus is sometimes depicted holding a book, usually called "The Book of Life".   In dreams, a book, or group of books can symbolize a search for knowledge, a fear that your failing intellectually, or a solution to a problem is coming, depending on the circumstances.  Seeing yourself writing a book in a dream usually means you need to make changes in your life.
