Spiritual Symbols: Mountain
Mountains and mountain tops are common spiritual symbols as well as symbols for many non-spiritual things. For thousands of years, it is common for people to go to a mountain top to get closer to God. The monasteries in Tibet are built on mountains. The pyramids of Egypt are essentially artificial mountains (among other things) and religious ceremonies were held on top of them. The Greek gods lived on Mt. Olympus. Gurus are often depicted as sitting on a mountain top. The Essenes always went to a mountain top to conduct their sunrise services. The highest mountain top is considered the point where heaven and earth meet.A mountain can symbolize eternity and constancy. They can also symbolize strength, firmness and stillness.
A mountain top represents reaching the state of full consciousness or cosmic consciousness. It represents seeing and understanding spiritual truth. This is what Martin Luther King Jr. meant when he said he had been to the mountain top. Pilgrims or monks climbing a mountain symbolizes the journey to enlightenment. Temples built more-or-less in the shape of mountains are symbols of the cosmic center. Passing through a mountain pass represents ascending to a new spiritual plain. In the gospel of Matthew, Jesus is said on several occasions to go “to the mountain”. While he may have done so literally, it is also considered by many scholars to symbolize his retreating from the materialism around him to recharge his spiritual batteries in a manner of speaking. Mountains are mentioned in other ways such as when Jesus advises that if we have faith only as much as a mustard seed (very small) that we could command the mountain to move and it would move.
A mountain with two summits is considered a solar symbol and they are often thought of as the homes of solar divinities.
