Ears of corn are symbolic of all ancient corn deities. It is symbolic of growth and fertility. Golden ears of corn or wheat are often symbolic of the sun, especially the spiritual sun. Corn can also symbolize fruitfulness and abundance. Corn is found in many ancient funeral rites where it symbolizes abundance in the afterlife. To many Native Americans, ears of corn, with their many seeds, represent the many people in the world or the many things in the universe. An ear of corn was a major symbol of the Eleusinian mysteries. In Mexico, the corn plant together with a hummingbird symbolizes the Sun Hero. Corn husks are sometimes used to make wreaths for Thanksgiving. The word "cereal" is derived from "Ceres", an ancient goddess whose symbol was corn. Corn, wine and oil are used in the ceremony of dedication for new Masonic lodges. As a dream symbol, corn usually represents some form of success or prosperity.
