Slow Down

Today, everything seems to be about speed and the faster, the better.  The phone company brags that their DSL is fast, but the cable TV company brags that it's internet service is faster.  Computers, cells phones and automobiles all talk about speed.  But is the fastest always the best?  One big trend today is to abbreviate everything so we can say it or type it faster.  Laugh Out Loud became LOL, Federal Express became FedEx, etc.  We in the International Community of Christ generally avoid this trend because when you are constantly abbreviating, constantly looking for short cuts, you miss things.
Try this simple experiment.  Drive down a road you haven't been on before at 60 miles per hour (where legal, please).  After, write down everything you noticed while driving down the road.  Than drive it again at thirty or forty.  Now write down everything you noticed.  If your like most people, you will have noticed a lot more at the slower speed.
Have you ever been rushing to solve a problem at work, you quickly try this, than something else, and it doesn't work?  Than, when you wake up the next morning, the solution pops into your head?  That has happened to many people.  When you slowed down to think the problem through better, your subconscious mind provided a solution, but when you were rushing it couldn't get through.
In spiritual development, this is even more important.  When we are constantly rushing around, we miss a lot that is happening around us, especially those things that are happening on a spiritual level.  So slow down sometimes.  Sit and listen to the birds chirping.  Look at the flowers and trees growing.  Most important of all, give your inner voice an opportunity to speak to you.
