Maintain Balance in Life

Some people think that, if they want to become spiritual, they must give up the material world.  Not only is that not true, but it can actually be harmful for your spiritual development.  If you ignore your physical needs, your physical body will become weak and ill and you will then be forced to care for it taking your attention away from spiritual pursuits.  Also, those who spend all their time on spiritual growth, tend to forget the need to help others grow as well.
So we need to take care of our physical needs as well as our spiritual ones, but within certain limits.  First, we should avoid violence as much as possible.  That includes avoiding violent sports like football and hockey, both as players and as fans.  Occasionally watching a game is usually harmless, but if you find yourself really getting involved, then it is something you need to get away from.  You also need to avoid excessive pursuit of wealth.  There is nothing wrong with having a good income and living comfortable, but when you get obsessed with the idea of making money, even when you already have enough, you can’t take your mind off of it and can’t really work on spiritual growth under those conditions.
So, in short, a balance between the material and the spiritual is the best, most productive path to follow, at least until you reach a stage of very advance spiritual development when, like other before, you will find it necessary to withdraw from most of the material world.
